Thanksgiving, A Native Event

Native Americans & Their Food Were Central to the First Thanksgiving

The Wampanoag Indians shared the "First Thanksgiving" with English Pilgrims at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1621. Of course, the foods served at the first Thanksgiving were traditional Native food: wild turkey, wild rice, yams, pumpkin, cranberries, corn, squash, beans, nuts, oysters, maple syrup.

My Amazon #1 bestselling Book of the Year debut novel, Blood to Rubies, is in part about Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce struggle to remain free. My book immerses readers in the Nez Perce culture and their ways, including their food. Book Clubs love BLOOD TO RUBIES, so I created a Nez Perce menu for their gatherings. This menu is a Pacific Northwest take on Thanksgiving with salmon, not turkey, featuring:

• Roasted Cedar Salmon with Maple & Pecan Glaze

• Sweet Potatoes, Roasted Pecans & Maple Crème Fraîche

• Wild Rice, Mushrooms, Chestnuts & Cranberry Pilaf

• Greens with Nuts & Berries & Elderberry Dressing

• Nez Perce Fry Bread

• Elderberry & Ginger Cocktail (or Mocktail)

Press HERE to view the recipes. Enjoy cooking your big family feast this week, whatever you make. And Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones!
